Objectives and Contents
Objectives of the Course Unit The main objective of this course is to provide dental students with a clear understanding of the fundamental principles of biophysics that are directly related to oral health and clinical practice. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply biophysical concepts to interpret physiological mechanisms, diagnostic tools, and therapeutic technologies used in dentistry.
Contents of the Course Unit The course covers the essential topics of biophysics, including the physical properties of biological tissues, bioelectricity, biomechanics of dental structures, and radiation physics in imaging. Special attention will be given to the application of biophysical methods in diagnostic radiology, laser dentistry, and biomaterials used in restorative treatments.
Contribution of the Course Intending to Provide the Professional Education This course strengthens the scientific foundation of dentistry by linking physical principles with professional applications. It enables future dentists to better understand modern technologies, select appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic tools, and provide evidence-based clinical care.

Key Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to:
1 Explain fundamental biophysical principles (e.g., thermodynamics, diffusion, and fluid dynamics) as they apply to oral tissues and dental systems.
2 Analyze the mechanical properties of dental materials and tissues, including stress, strain, and elasticity in clinical contexts.
3 Apply concepts of bioelectricity and membrane potentials to understand nerve conduction and pain perception in dental practice.
4 Describe transport mechanisms (diffusion, osmosis, active transport) in relation to saliva, enamel, and dentin physiology.
5 Evaluate the interaction of radiation and light with biological tissues, particularly in dental imaging and laser applications.
6 Interpret biophysical processes underlying oral health and disease, such as mineralization, demineralization, and biofilm formation.

ETIS : İstanbul Aydin University Education & Training System Cyprus Aydin University ECTS Information Package ECTS Information Package European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) which was introduced by the European Council in 1989, within the framework of Erasmus, now part of the Life Long Learning Programme, is a student-centered credit system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a programme specified in terms of learning outcomes and competences to be acquired. The implementation of ECTS has, since its introduction, has been found wide acceptance in the higher education systems across the European Countries and become a credit system and an indispensable tool supporting major aims of the Bologna Process and, thus, of European Higher Education Area as it makes teaching and learning in higher education more transparent across Europe and facilitates the recognition of all studies. The system allows for the transfer of learning experiences between different institutions, greater student mobility and more flexible routes to gain degrees. It also offers a systematic approach to curriculum design as well as quality assessment and improvement and, thus, quality assurance.
